The Nest
Both yellow jackets and hornet’s nests are the same in structure. It’s a paper nest made of wood fibers. Unlike the paper wasps nest, the yellow jackets nest has a paper like coating that is brown or gray in color. It sort of resembles a paper-maché ball with an entrance hole at the bottom of it.

The Cycle of Life
When a yellow jacket queen first starts her nest in the spring, it’s quite small, roughly the size of a golf ball. Heading into fall, their nests can get very, very large. Most cases the nests get to be about the size of a basketball with a few thousand yellow jackets inside. Like the paper and mud wasp, at
the end of their life cycle the queen raises new queens and they go off to hibernate for the winter
and the rest of the original nest dies.

Are They Dangerous?
Yellow jackets are very aggressive and should be left to a professional to take care of. At the first sign of having yellow jackets you should call an exterminator immediately. Like carpenter ants, they have a mandible and can chew through walls with ease. Blocking the hole to their nest does not kill them; instead, they get mad and end up chewing through the walls of your home even faster in a desperate attempt to get out of the nest. Now you have an even angrier swarm of yellow jackets with a direct way into your home from their nest.
